Let's get one thing straight: the IPA is not going anywhere. Despite every "are IPAs over?" thinkpiece published since 2019, Americans keep buying them by the case. The craft IPA category now accounts for over a quarter of all craft beer sales. So no, they're not over. They're evolving.
Here are the 10 IPAs actually worth your money right now.
If you've never had Trillium, prepare to understand what all the fuss is about. This Boston-area brewery helped define the hazy IPA movement, and Congress Street remains their flagship for good reason. Juicy, pillowy, with massive tropical notes and zero bitterness. It's the IPA that converts IPA skeptics.
ABV: 7.8% | Style: New England IPA | Find it: New England regional distribution and their webstore
Other Half out of Brooklyn knows how to hop a beer. All Green Everything is a double IPA that somehow drinks like a single — dangerously smooth, with layers of pine, melon, and fresh-cut grass. A classic for a reason.
ABV: 8.5% | Style: Double IPA | Find it: New York and select national distribution
Before the hazy craze, there was the 60 Minute. This Delaware legend is still one of the most balanced, drinkable IPAs ever made. It's not trendy, it's just really, really good. Continuous hopping throughout the 60-minute boil creates a complexity you can't fake.
ABV: 6% | Style: American IPA | Find it: Nationwide
Session IPAs get a bad rap. People assume "low ABV" means "low flavor." Easy Jack proves them wrong. At just 4.5%, this crushable IPA delivers real citrus and tropical hop character without the next-day regret. Perfect for a long afternoon on the porch.
ABV: 4.5% | Style: Session IPA | Find it: West Coast and growing nationally
Yes, it's still worth the hype. Yes, you should still seek it out. Pliny remains the gold standard for double IPAs — clean, piney, with bitter orange notes and exceptional balance. The fact that it's been on "best beer" lists for 20+ years and still belongs there says everything.
ABV: 8% | Style: Imperial IPA | Find it: Northern California taproom and limited distribution
Sierra Nevada is a masterclass in consistency. Torpedo uses their innovative "hop torpedo" device to dry-hop with whole cone hops, delivering bold piney and citrus character at an approachable price point. This is the IPA you buy by the six-pack for a Tuesday.
ABV: 7.2% | Style: American IPA | Find it: Nationwide
While Allagash is best known for their Belgian-style whites, their seasonal and limited IPA releases consistently rank among the most thoughtfully brewed in the Northeast. Keep an eye on their taproom schedule.
ABV: varies | Style: Various IPA | Find it: Maine and Northeast
Pennsylvania's Tröegs brewing makes a lot of excellent beer, but Perpetual IPA might be their most underrated. Year-round, widely available, and genuinely excellent — this is the IPA your friend who "doesn't really like IPAs" will actually enjoy.
ABV: 7.5% | Style: American IPA | Find it: Mid-Atlantic and growing nationally
A legendary Michigan IPA that has won more awards than most breweries produce in their lifetime. Centennial hops dominate — grapefruit, pine, and a clean dry finish. If you see it on draft, order it immediately.
ABV: 7% | Style: American IPA | Find it: Nationwide (their distribution has expanded significantly)
New Belgium's Voodoo Ranger line has taken over grocery store shelves for good reason — the beer is actually excellent. American Haze is their hazy IPA entry, offering tropical and citrus notes at a price point that won't make you wince. Best budget hazy IPA on the market.
ABV: 5.9% | Style: Hazy IPA | Find it: Nationwide
A few rules that'll save you from bad IPA purchases:
Always check the date. Hops degrade fast. A hazy IPA that's 3 months old is a sad shadow of itself. Look for "packaged on" dates and avoid anything more than 60 days old for NEIPAs, 90 days for West Coast styles.
Cold storage matters. IPAs stored warm lose their hop aroma quickly. Buy from stores that refrigerate their beer. Yes, this matters.
Don't judge by bitterness alone. IBUs (International Bitterness Units) don't tell the full story anymore. Modern hazy IPAs can have enormous hop flavor with low perceived bitterness. Try before you write off a style.
